Mulching time!

‘Mulch in March’ is often too late now for those of us in the South, as bulbs and perennials have starting popping up. Mulch borders from February with peat free compost, bark or woodland mulch, or aggregates to help retain moisture. 50-75mm of dressing will make all the difference – if you cannot do the whole garden, then perhaps dress one border well, and do another next year?

For clay soils, dress with compost, bark or leafmould to help improve the soil condition. Sandy soils benefit from richer compost, bark or well rotted manure. If your soil is very alkaline, adding bracken compost or pine bark and needles can help add acidity.
