When our Clients bought their home, they inherited a generous garden laid entirely to faux grass and composite decking – both beyond salvation. The high hedges were imposing and the nature-loving owners wanted an attractive, family-safe space which allowed for entertaining, veg growing, and plenty of wildlife.
New beginnings!
Borders of naturalistic planting to soften the landscaping, and transition to the meadow bring movement and texture to this space. Reducing the hedge height, whilst retaining the conifers improved the balance and light

Veg garden
UC4 sleepers provide generous beds, hazel hurdles keep children and dogs out of this area. A bespoke potting bench and two self-fertile apples fan trained
The wild pond is in this area – we reused some of the river stones that lined all the fences
A log wall completed the fence and provides habitat
Entertaining space
New (real!) grass lawns lead through the space, with island beds filled with grasses and perennials. A generous semi-circular deck creates an easy flow from the house, and a small circular seating area (perfect for G’n’T for two) is situated to catch the evening sun
The outbuildings were painted near black and attractive climbers – this gives them a more rustic barn appearance and reduced their visual impact.
Where the Wild Things Are
The end of the garden is sown with wild flower and grass mix, and native shrubs – blackthorn for sloes and dogwood provide berries and screening
This created an area of meadow for birds and insects to enjoy, and connects to the log wall and pond.
